On October 13, 2011 at 4:02 p.m. the Marin County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received several emergency calls reporting a small plane crash near the Smith Ranch Airport, 400 Smith Ranch Road, San Rafael. Deputies responded to the marsh area east of the airport and located a small plane with moderate damage. The pilot, who was uninjured, had already climbed out of the plane and walked back to the airport.

The 65 year-old Novato resident explained that he had just taken off from the Smith Ranch Airport in his GN1 Air Camper, which he had built himself, when he experienced engine trouble and ditched the plane in the marsh.

The National Transportation Safety Board determined there will be no investigation into the matter.

Deputies have closed their investigation into the matter.
